New Delhi: Delhi Police has written to X seeking the removal of abusive and defamatory content targeting constitutional authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the recent student protests. It has also sought account details of users, responsible for posting such content.In one of the notices sent to the social media platform, cops listed posts from six accounts, stating they contained false, defamatory, manipulated and objectionable content allegedly disseminated with the malicious intent to tarnish the reputation of public figures and other individuals.Police said they registered a case under sections 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 353 (statements conducing to public mischief), 356 (defamation) of BNS regarding such content and that an investigation was on.The notice stated that circulation of such content caused serious harm to the reputation, dignity and public image of PM and directed X to remove or disable access to the specified accounts and URLs within three hours, while preserving relevant data, logs and subscriber information for future investigative and evidentiary purposes. “Such acts facilitate misuse of social media platforms for defamation… and cyber-enabled offences,” the notice read.Several X users claimed they received notices from cops over posts they shared on the platform.As part of its continuing efforts to debunk misinformation circulating on social media, Delhi Police Wednesday refuted claims that a protester had sustained gunshot injuries during the July 20 violence in central Delhi.
