Ahmedabad: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) on Thursday started commercial production at the fourth plant at its Hansalpur manufacturing facility in Gujarat. With this, the site’s annual production capacity has now increased to 1 million vehicles.The addition of Plant D, with an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units, has increased the Hansalpur facility’s capacity from 7.5 lakh units to 10 lakh units a year. It also becomes India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturing facility at a single location.“The milestone makes Hansalpur the first Suzuki manufacturing facility globally to achieve an annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles,” MSIL said in its stock exchange filing.With the commissioning of Plant D, Maruti Suzuki’s total manufacturing capacity has risen to 2.9 million units annually. The company has invested Rs 25,288.7 crore in the Hansalpur facility, including an estimated Rs 3,900 crore for the new plant. Plant D will initially manufacture the e VITARA battery electric vehicle.

The Hansalpur complex, spread across 640 acres with an integrated suppliers’ park, currently produces the Baleno, Fronx, Swift and e VITARA. The facility accounted for nearly 47% of Maruti Suzuki’s total exports in FY26, the company said.“With the start of commercial production at the fourth plant, our Hansalpur facility’s annual capacity has reached 1 million vehicles. The new line will strengthen our ability to meet demand in India and overseas,” managing director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said. “The Hansalpur facility and the upcoming plant at Sanand would support the company’s long-term target of producing 4 million vehicles annually in India.”The Hansalpur expansion comes as Maruti Suzuki accelerates its manufacturing push in Gujarat. The company is setting up a second automobile plant at Khoraj Industrial Estate in Sanand with a planned investment of about Rs 35,000 crore. Its board has approved an initial Rs 4,960 crore for land acquisition from GIDC and site preparation. The proposed facility, targeted for commissioning in FY29, will have an annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles and will play a key role in the company’s plan to raise its production capacity to 4 million units annually in India.Maruti Suzuki said Hansalpur rolled out its first vehicle in Feb 2017 and has produced 5 million vehicles cumulatively as of May 7 this year.The company’s manufacturing footprint now comprises Hansalpur with a capacity of 1 million units, Manesar with 9 lakh units, and Gurugram and Kharkhoda with 5 lakh units each.
