Pune: A car driver ran over a casual worker sleeping along a road at Mamta Chowk in Balewadi at around 5.30am on Friday. He then took the man to a hospital and claimed that he found the man unconscious on the road.The deceased has been identified as Baba Baburao Chavan (54), a resident of Katraj. The deceased was a casual worker and used to sleep on footpaths across the city’s isolated roads.Chandrashekar Sawant, senior inspector of Baner police, said, “The car driver was trying to negotiate a left turn when another vehicle passed very close to his car. To avoid a collision, the driver then turned his car sharply to the left and ended up running over Chavan.”“The driver, who is a techie from Baner, picked up the injured Chavan. He started driving and found a police patrolling team on Baner Road. He told the policemen that he had found the unconscious man on the road and had picked him up for treatment,” Sawant said.“The man then shifted Chavan to a hospital in Aundh. Chavan, however, died at the hospital. The police team reached the hospital and took details of the car driver and the deceased. The car driver took the police team to another spot and claimed that he had found Chavan at that location and left,” he said.“Our team then tracked the route of the car to ascertain where exactly the car driver had picked up Chavan. We later found the spot where the car had actually run over him. We have found CCTV footage of the accident,” Sawant said.Baner police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the car driver. “Our team has started searching for the driver,” he said.
