Bengal govt to review leasehold land use by pvt firms

Kolkata: The Bengal govt will review the utilisation of leasehold land allotted to private companies during the previous Trinamool Congress govt, with an eye to reclaim unused or misused plots for productive industrial use.The decision comes as the govt prepares to unveil an industrial policy — including a land policy and incentive framework — by Aug 15.During the Trinamool years, large tracts of land were allotted to several industrial houses for manufacturing projects, many of which never materialised. The review will serve two purposes, a senior official said: establishing whether leasehold land has been used for the projects for which it was granted, and determining whether it has lain unused for an extended period.Where land is found unutilised, the govt may cancel the lease and reallocate it to other entities for industrial use, another official said.Where it has been only partially used, the govt will seek clarification on timelines and may set deadlines for project implementation. If land has been diverted to purposes other than those specified in the lease agreement without prior permission, the govt will seek explanation from the lessee before considering financial penalties or cancellation of the lease.
