Protester detained over ‘Free Umar Khalid’ placard | Goa News



PANAJI: Following tensions in Panaji late on Saturday night between BJP workers and a group celebrating the resignation of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Panaji police made a preventive detention of protester Danish Mohammad and arrested activist Sudeep Dalvi.Danish was detained and released on Sunday after BJP workers complained that he displayed a placard reading, “Free Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam”. Dalvi was arrested on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman after complaints alleged that he used abusive language towards her. Both were part of the celebratory rally following the Union minister’s resignation.Meanwhile, another student was summoned to Mapusa police station for questioning on Sunday.Amreen Shaikh, a member of the Ujwaad student organisation who participated in the protest in Mapusa over the NEET paper leak, was called to the police station for questioning.The questioning followed a complaint by a citizens’ group regarding a demonstration held at Lohia Garden on July 24. The complainants alleged that the gathering included contentious political slogans and was an unauthorised public assembly.According to police, Shaikh was questioned for about three hours while officers examined electronic evidence and video footage to determine whether any violations had occurred.“The matter is under investigation,” a senior police official said.
