Ahmedabad: As flooded roads brought vehicles to a halt across Ahmedabad, traffic police crane teams worked round the clock to keep traffic moving. Forty cranes removed more than 1,400 stranded two-wheelers, cars, and heavy vehicles. Some were moved off busy roads, while others were taken to nearby service centres.According to the traffic police, several vehicles stalled or became locked after water entered them on flooded roads. The stranded vehicles added to congestion at multiple locations.The traffic police deployed 16 govt-owned cranes and hired 24 private ones for the operation to remove the vehicles.Apart from clearing roads, traffic police also helped vehicle owners by transporting their stalled vehicles to the nearest service centres. Officials said this assistance enabled motorists to avoid paying commercial towing charges while ensuring that their vehicles reached repair facilities safely.Traffic personnel and crane operators worked round the clock during the heavy rain. More than 350 two-wheelers and cars were moved each day on average, according to a traffic police statement.The crane teams responded to calls from different parts of Ahmedabad as part of the police’s monsoon traffic management plan.Ahmedabad received 295mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 6am on July 24, according to the India Meteorological Department. The downpour flooded roads, stranded vehicles, and caused widespread traffic disruption.
