Mumbai: After remaining out of service for nearly three years, the escalators at the Grant Road skywalk near Nana Chowk are set to be replaced, with the BMC placing a Rs 4.16-crore proposal before the Standing Committee for approval on Thursday.The project involves replacing two defunct escalators — one on the Gamdevi side and the other at Nana Chowk — that connect the skywalk to Grant Road railway station (West). The existing escalators have been declared beyond repair, forcing thousands of commuters, including senior citizens, schoolchildren and persons with disabilities, to use the stairs.According to the proposal, the civic body will replace the existing escalators with new units measuring 8.7 metres and 5.7 metres in height. The work also includes repairing damaged handrails, railings and collapsible gates, besides constructing polycarbonate overhead sheds to protect the escalators from rain and direct sunlight.The BMC has proposed awarding the contract to the lowest bidder, M/s Callisto Global Pvt Ltd, at a cost of Rs 4.16 crore.The contract includes a one-year warranty and two years of comprehensive maintenance, with officials saying the provision is aimed at ensuring the new escalators remain functional and reducing the likelihood of prolonged breakdowns.The Grant Road skywalk is a key pedestrian link used daily by railway commuters travelling between Nana Chowk, Gamdevi and Grant Road station. Civic officials said replacing the long-defunct escalators would significantly improve accessibility and commuter convenience, particularly for the elderly and differently abled.
