Gujarat: Man gets life term under BNS, Atrocities Act for attempted murder

Ahmedabad: A special court in Kalol town of Gandhinagar district has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of a youth belonging to the Scheduled Caste community.The man was convicted under BNS and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.The court delivered the verdict within three months of the attack and in just 20 days of police filing the chargesheet against the accused, Vishalsinh Rajput, a resident of Chhatral town.Additional public prosecutor Jignesh Joshi said that Rajput was put on trial for assault on April 18, 2026. Rajput hurled caste abuses and slit the victim’s throat. However, the victim was rushed to the hospital and survived.After the trial, additional sessions judge B R Rajput found the accused guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a Rs 2.50 lakh fine. The judge began his order by quoting from the Mahabharata, “In that kingdom (or society) where a wicked culprit does not receive adequate punishment, sins multiply, and righteousness undoubtedly declines.”The court said, “If such an accused is not awarded maximum punishment prescribed under law, society will not remain safe.”
