Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad and Surat together recorded 30,859 cases of theft, robbery, rape, murder, molestation, kidnapping, extortion, prohibition, gambling and cyberfraud in a year, according to data tabled by Gujarat govt in state assembly.The govt furnished the figures in response to a question raised by senior Congress MLA from Anklav, Amit Chavda. Of the total cases registered between Aug 1, 2025 and July 31, Ahmedabad accounted for 18,519 cases, while Surat recorded 12,340 cases.Prohibition offences accounted for the bulk of cases in both cities. Ahmedabad registered 12,889 prohibition cases, followed by 2,860 cases of theft, 1,495 gambling and 495 cyberfraud cases. The city also recorded 289 cases of rape, 225 of kidnapping, 117 molestation cases, 83 murder cases, 56 robbery cases and 10 extortion cases.In Surat, police registered 8,556 prohibition cases, 1,275 theft cases, 1,137 gambling cases and 333 cyberfraud cases. The Diamond City recorded 331 cases of rape, 297 kidnapping, 134 molestation, 115 murder, 108 extortion and 54 robbery cases.The reply stated that police had arrested 38,877 accused in the cases covered by the data as of July 31, while 725 accused were yet to be arrested.Police said they were tracing absconding accused by checking their relatives and associates and using mobile and technical surveillance, besides gathering information through informers. In cyberfraud cases, investigators are examining bank KYC details, account statements, transaction records, mobile data and IP addresses.For accused based outside Gujarat, police teams have been dispatched to other states with the assistance of local police. Look Out Circulars have also been issued against accused who have fled abroad.
