Kanksa: Skeletal remains of at least four persons were recovered in a forest near Jatgaria in West Burdwan’s Kanksa block on Wednesday, triggering panic across surrounding villages.Upon receiving information from local villagers, a heavy police contingent along with a team of forensic experts reached the site. Biological samples, soil residue and potential personal belongings were collected. The remains were taken to a state hospital where the postmortem was carried out to determine the age, sex and causes of death.Investigators have started to go through missing person reports lodged at various police stations in the area to establish the identities of the deceased. Cops confirmed that a missing complaint filed on July 8 at Budbud police station is under scrutiny.Addressing the media, senior police officials stated that the identity of the remains cannot be confirmed until DNA profiling is completed. Biological samples are being dispatched to the state forensic laboratory. Investigators, led by DCP (East Zone) Raspreet Singh, assured that all possible angles, including foul play and personal enmity, were being probed.Locals suspect a group suicide pact or multiple murders. Police authorities, however, said no conclusion could be drawn at this stage.
