Kolkata: The state health department on Monday nominated three doctors to the West Bengal Medical Council, in the BJP govt’s first move to alter the council’s composition. Sources said Pranat Tudu, MLA from Binpur, Kalyan Ashis Mukherjee of BJP’s state doctors’ cell, and Mrinmoy Adhikary, assistant professor at Murshidabad Medical College, will replace Trinamool-nominated doctors Nirmal Maji, Sourav Paul and Asim Sarkar. Since the RG Kar movement, sections of the medical community have accused the WBMC of being a hub of corruption. The current council election was also challenged in court over alleged rigging. While the govt can replace nominated members, elected members cannot be removed without fresh polls.
