Sanand units to rally over rain woes

Ahmedabad: Industries in Sanand GIDC have been hit by waterlogging following recent heavy rain. To register their protest, the Sanand Industries Association (SIA) has announced a rally on Monday, demanding accountability for what it termed faulty infrastructure.“Due to severe flooding, power supply has been completely disrupted in nearly 50 factories, forcing a total shutdown of operations. Floodwaters also entered at least 10 major units, damaging critical machinery and raw materials. According to initial estimates, the industrial area has suffered direct losses of more than Rs 100 crore, besides production losses running into hundreds of crores,” said Ajit Shah, president of SIA.

Industry leaders said the problem has become an annual ordeal. Every monsoon, businesses suffer major losses, yet the authorities offer little beyond assurances. What has angered industrialists is that GIDC recently spent around Rs 300 crore on a storm-water drainage system, the association said.
