Ahmedabad: Citing severe monsoon disruptions, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has written to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) requesting at least a 15-day extension for filing non-audit income tax returns (ITR-1 and ITR-2) for assessment year 2026-27 beyond the July 31 deadline.The representation, made on behalf of taxpayers, tax professionals, and the trade and industry in Gujarat, seeks an extension, especially as the due date coincides with ongoing severe weather alerts.The representation highlights that unprecedented rainfall, flash floods, and waterlogging have paralysed life across the state. Record downpours, including Ahmedabad’s 294.6 mm within 24 hours on July 23, forced mass evacuations and prompted military and disaster response deployments.

GCCI emphasized that tax compliance is severely crippled in Tier-2, Tier-3, and rural areas due to prolonged power outages and weak internet connectivity. The situation is further compounded by recurring technical glitches on the income tax portal, including system timeouts, slow loading, and data reconciliation errors in AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS.While non-audit filers of ITR-3 and ITR-4 already have an extended Aug 31 deadline, GCCI urged immediate relief for individual taxpayers and professionals struggling under current emergency conditions.CA Jainik Vakil, chairperson of GCCI direct tax committee, said, “An early announcement of a 15-day extension is essential to restore lost working days and ensure correct compliance.”
