Ahmedabad: The civic body will take up large-scale plantation this year under ‘Mission 5-Million Tree’ to create natural shade along roads and near traffic signals.Plantation will be carried out on roadsides, footpaths, central verges and canal banks under a joint SOP prepared by AMC’s Garden, Engineering and Water Resources Management departments. An AMC official said large trees will be planted on existing and new footpaths at 3 to 4-metre intervals, depending on site conditions and road width. On newly built central verges, asphalt and debris will be removed to expose natural soil before the Road and Garden departments carry out soil filling and plantation.Along canals, shrubs will be planted at least two feet away from the edge to avoid structural damage. Large trees near canals will be planned according to road width and site conditions.AMC will use theme-based species for different locations. Central verges will get compact flowering trees, roadsides will get shady and seasonal flowering trees, and canal sides will get flowering shrubs. The Garden Department will handle watering, trimming and maintenance. Trees will be trimmed to ensure they do not block streetlights, traffic signals, CCTV, RLVD or ANPR cameras.
