New Delhi: The owner and the driver of a car that allegedly mowed down a traffic head constable on duty near Alipur Wednesday have been arrested, police said.The accused have been identified as Neeraj (22), a first-year college student and owner of the car, and Kuldeep (29), a tempo driver who was allegedly behind the wheel. Police have also seized the vehicle, a Maruti Suzuki Baleno.The car hit head constable Amit around 6 pm when, as part of the traffic unit on the Singhu border, he was conducting a speed enforcement drive on NH-44. The traffic team was checking for speeding vehicles.“The accident happened when a traffic team from Narela Circle, comprising ASI Naresh, HC Vinod and HC Amit, was doing a speed challan enforcement on the highway. HC Amit signalled the speeding vehicle to stop, but instead of slowing down, the driver continued driving rashly and hit him. The impact threw Amit on the road, leaving him critically injured,” a senior police officer said.He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.A case was registered at Alipur police station under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of BNS. Both the accused were subsequently traced and apprehended.Police said Amit, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, is survived by his wife, Aarti, and their two children. His elder son is 10 years old, and the daughter is just three. “Thursday was Aarti’s birthday,” his brother, Sumit, told TOI. “She is a homemaker and Amit was the family’s sole breadwinner. I had spoken to him just three days ago. He would always encourage me to prepare for govt exams because he wanted the best for all of us,” he said.In another case, a 31-year-old Tata Ace driver was killed after being hit by a speeding scooter near Mukundpur flyover in north Delhi Wednesday.The victim, Faeem, was declared brought dead at BSA Hospital.Police said he had stopped to retie a rope securing goods on his vehicle when the scooter rider hit him and fled.
