Margao: Chaos erupted at the Margao municipality on Saturday as a massive crowd swarmed the premises to collect forms for the newly launched Goa Ujjwala scheme, forcing authorities to briefly shut the doors of the municipality building to control the rush.Chief minister Pramod Sawant had launched the scheme on Saturday, under which eligible households will receive financial support of Rs 3,000 annually — equivalent to the cost of three domestic LPG or PNG refills — through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into their bank accounts.Word of the scheme’s launch drew hundreds of beneficiaries to the municipality through the morning, with the crowd swelling rapidly as people lined up to collect application forms. As the rush turned unruly, with people pushing and jostling at the entrance, civic officials were compelled to temporarily shut the doors, leaving many stranded outside amid rising tempers.The situation was brought under control after Margao MLA Digambar Kamat arrived and intervened at the spot. Kamat spoke to the gathered beneficiaries and coordinated with civic authorities, following which the doors were reopened and distribution of forms resumed in a somewhat orderly manner.
