Gujarat: Dholka jeweller held for cheating investors of ₹74.5L

Ahmedabad: Dholka Town Police have arrested jeweller Amitkumar Soni, owner of Om Jewellers in Dholka, for allegedly cheating investors of Rs 74.5 lakh after promising attractive returns on silver investments.According to the FIR, Soni and his son Parth allegedly won customers’ trust by claiming that investments in gold and silver would generate good profits. Police said the accused initially returned investments with profits, prompting investors to put in larger amounts.The complainant and witnesses collectively invested 113kg of silver, valued at about Rs 1.4 crore at Rs 1.2 lakh per kg. When they later sought the return of their silver, principal amount and promised profits, the accused allegedly gave back some jewellery and cash but failed to repay Rs 74.5 lakh.After repeated assurances went unfulfilled, the investors approached police. An FIR was registered for criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust under BNS, along with provisions of Gujarat Protection of Interest of Depositors (In Financial Establishments) Act, 2003.Dholka Town police inspector A R Dhawan formed a team and arrested Amitkumar on Wednesday. Police sought his custodial remand after questioning him, and a court granted remand till Sunday.Police said a preliminary probe has revealed a similar earlier complaint involving members of the same family. Cops have urged anyone who invested cash, gold or silver with the jewellers and did not receive returns to contact Dholka Town Police.
