4 Customs officials suspended over ‘protocol breach’

Ahmedabad: Customs department has suspended four officials after passenger complaints that they took away their valuables at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Two of the officials suspended are superintendents and the other two are inspectors.While officials were not available for comment, sources close to the case said that the incident occurred on in the early hours of Sep 4 when a group arrived from Dubai.“The officials allegedly asked two passengers for details about the valuables with them, demanded cash and even took away the valuables. At that time, they had not turned on their body-worn cameras issued by the department. The details were not registered as official entry, and the passengers also refused to press charges,” said sources.However, when the matter reached higher-ups, the passengers were traced and their statements were recorded. Sources said that the current probe is about bypassing standard search protocols and assessing the harassment allegations.
