Chennai: A second-year engineering student suffered critical injuries after jumping from a building at a private engineering college near Sriperumbudur on Thursday, a day after a 19-year-old student of the same institution died after leaping off the fifth floor.On Thursday evening, Sasidharan, a second-year engineering student, jumped from the Rajalakshmi Engineering College building. He was rushed to a private hospital in the locality, where he is undergoing treatment.Police said Sasidharan had completed a diploma course and joined the college directly in the second year about 15 days ago. Police said the reason for his suspected suicide attempt was yet to be established.The incident came a day after Sherin, 19, a second-year Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning student at the same college, died after jumping from the fifth floor of a college building on Wednesday evening. Sherin was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries but died later. Her body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for postmortem examination.Police said Sherin’s father works abroad and her mother is a professor. Preliminary inquiries indicated that she had been experiencing emotional distress. A note recovered during the investigation is also being examined.Officials from the Sriperumbudur revenue division have conducted an inquiry at the college following Sherin’s death.
