Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court has directed Ahmedabad district superintendent of police to provide necessary protection to an intercaste couple, who recently got married against the wish of the bride’s family. HC gave the direction so that the newlyweds could attend a court hearing.The couple from Viramgam town of Ahmedabad district got married after elopement. As the union was not acceptable to the woman’s family members, her father filed an application under Section 100 of the BNSS in a Viramgam JMFC court, alleging that his daughter was being unlawfully confined by the groom and his family.The magisterial court issued a search warrant requiring the woman to appear before the court on Aug 29. The couple along with two others from the groom’s side wanted to attend the court proceedings, but were apprehensive that they would be attacked by the woman’s family.Consequently, the couple, the groom’s father, and a relative approached HC to quash the JMFC court proceedings initiated by the bride’s father. Alternatively, they sought police protection to enable them to safely attend the court hearings.After hearing the grievance, Justice M R Mengdey ordered, “Having regard to the apprehension voiced by the learned advocate for the petitioners that there is an apprehension of an attack if the petitioners appear before the learned magistrate, the concerned police authorities i.e. superintendent of police, Ahmedabad Rural is directed to provide necessary police protection to the petitioners as and when they appear before concerned court.”
