Chennai: Days after Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested B T Arasakumar in connection with the ₹100-crore fraud involving private schools, he was put under preventive detention by police, invoking the Goondas Act.Arasakumar, 59, was arrested based on a complaint by Elangovan, secretary of the federation of associations of private schools, TN. The complainant said private school managements were promised permanent recognition, grade upgradation, DTCP and CMDA approvals, no-objection certificates and other statutory clearances through Arasakumar’s purported political and official connections.Police said Arasakumar collected more than ₹100 crore from school managements across TN, but failed to secure the promised approvals or return the money.Following his arrest, CCB received complaints from 47 schools involving more than ₹7 crore. Investigators analysed digital transactions linked to the complaints, froze his bank accounts and launched a search for key suspect Muthukumar.
