Ahmedabad: Barely a year after its inauguration, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Rs 58 crore Vastral Sports Complex has come under scrutiny after water began leaking from the gym ceiling during the rain. Videos of the incident went viral on social media, prompting the civic body to order a site inspection and initiate a probe. On Monday morning, members recorded videos of the leakage, which quickly went viral on social media. Along with the leakage, members also alleged that the gym admitted more members than its actual capacity. The incident also raised questions over the management of civic sports infrastructure ahead of Ahmedabad’s preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Citing its inability to manage such facilities independently, AMC had handed over newly built sports complexes to private operators. In Feb 2025, the heritage and recreational committee approved a proposal to lease the Vastral Sports Complex to a private agency for a monthly rent of Rs 2 lakh. Under the agreement, AMC bears 50% of the electricity bill, while the remaining cost is paid by the private operator.Besides indoor sports facilities, the sports complex houses an international-standard football ground with two movable-pole courts.
