Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday assured Union home minister Amit Shah of making Goa a model state in terms of zero tolerance to drugs, increase in conviction rate, fighting against crime and maintaining law and order.Shah said that Goa has full potential to become a model state in the country and this beautiful state, Goa, achieving all targets of security and development, will become ‘bindi of Bharat’.The Union minister said that within three months, a lab would be established at the National Forensic Science University at Ponda to test different types of drugs in Goa. During the state review meeting, the CM urged Union govt to establish a lab to fast-track drug testing in the state.Sawant assured Shah that state govt will work in close coordination with central govt for making Goa a model state in all aspects.The Union home minister chaired a review meeting on issues related to Goa. The meeting reviewed implementation of three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas, matters related to NDPS, coastal security, fugitives’ matters, disaster management, police modernisation, administration of enemy properties and deportation of illegal migrants, especially those involved in crimes and narcotics and drug offences, and other important matters.Shah appreciated efforts of Goa govt and state police for taking several initiatives to maintain law and order in the state and coastal security.The Union minister said that these efforts have contributed towards taking Goa towards becoming ‘Nasha Mukt’ and successfully dealing with cybercrimes. Shah urged state govt and all stakeholders to make a comprehensive security assessment related to emerging security challenges.Shah said that there is a need to ensure constant monitoring of important trends and patterns, cross linkages of various kinds of crimes, inter-state movement of criminals and coastal security. He said that all steps taken by the MHA and state govt should ensure that Goa becomes the top state in terms of law and order in the country.Goa govt officers told Shah that a declining trend is being noticed in violent crimes in the state. However, cybercrimes, crimes related to narcotics and foreigner-related violations need strict action in the state. DGP Alok Kumar said that the initiatives are being undertaken by Goa govt on coastal security, cybercrimes and narcotics matters in a comprehensive manner.The DGP also said that after implementation of three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas and effective implementation of ICJS, the conviction rate in the state has gone up to 53% from 22%. In many instances, the courts are now able to decide criminal matters within six to eight months.
