Gujarat: AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava withdraws parole application

Ahmedabad: AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava on Tuesday withdrew his application for parole from Gujarat High Court, which questioned its maintainability. The Dediapada legislator is in prison after being denied regular bail by the court last week. Vasava, his wife, his personal assistant and six others were sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in a 2023 case of extortion and assault on forest officials.Vasava sought parole from HC to attend the monsoon session of the state assembly, scheduled to be held from Sep 9 to 11. He is facing disqualification as his conviction has not been stayed yet. When Vasava’s parole application came up for hearing, Justice S T Thaker questioned its maintainability and suggested that he apply for temporary bail. His counsel urged the court to allow him to withdraw the application so that a representation for parole can be made before the jail authorities. The HC said, “Learned advocate for the applicant seeks permission to withdraw the present application with liberty to file an appropriate application before the authority as prescribed under law. In view of the same, the applicant is permitted to withdraw. This court has not gone into the merit of the case. (sic)”
