Woman cheated of Rs21.90 lakh in online matrimonial fraud

Pune: Online fraudsters allegedly cheated a 34-year-old woman from Janawadi of Rs21.90 lakh by promising to marry her by posing as a professional based in France.The woman lodged a complaint with Chatushrungi police on Friday, stating it happened between Aug 8 and 25 this year.Senior inspector Uttam Bhajnawale said, “The woman is unemployed and unmarried. She had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website. The fraudsters had also uploaded a profile on the same matrimonial website. One of them sent her an interest request, which she accepted. The complainant and the man then started interacting on the matrimonial website, with him claiming he was based in France.”“He claimed he would visit India to meet her. Later, she received a call from a person claiming to be an immigration officer, who said they had detained the man in France while he was coming to India to meet her. The caller demanded visa fees, visa clearance fees, ticket charges, currency conversion charges, etc. He also threatened to book her in case she failed to pay the money,” Bhajnawale said.The suspects shared a UPI ID and she transferred money on several occasions to help the man. Later, she searched online and realised she was duped.
