Loliem villagers oppose villa project over environmental concerns

Canacona: Loliem-Polem locals have opposed a real estate company’s housing project comprising 49 premium villas with private swimming pools. The panchayat inspected the proposed project on Monday.Loliem residents cited concerns over the project and its impact on the village’s rich biodiversity. Resident Denis Fernandes said that Loliem falls within an eco-sensitive zone as notified by the Union environment ministry, and large-scale development in this zone is a serious environmental concern.Local Prashant Pagi said that Loliem and the entire Canacona taluka face severe water shortage during summer. A project of this scale would place additional pressure on already scarce water resources, said local Sanjan Naik. The proposed site is also frequented by wild animals, raising concerns about its impact on local wildlife, said former sarpanch Shailesh Pagi.Several residents were present to ensure a fair and transparent inspection.
