Kolkata: The city received a couple of spells of moderate rain even as the city remained under cloud cover under the impact of a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-Bengal coasts. Some districts of south Bengal could receive heavy rain (70 mm-110 mm) on Friday, though Kolkata may receive sharp drizzles. “There could be a couple of spells like Friday, but the city is unlikely to receive heavy, consistent showers. It will remain cloudy, though, and drizzles are likely. The low-pressure area moved towards north Odisha and the adjoining coast. Its impact will be limited to the coastal districts in Bengal. East and West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura may receive spells of heavy shower under the impact. It will wane, though, over the next couple of days,” said Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.Districts such as Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and North 24 Parganas are expected to experience light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning at most or many places.South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore face heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) with thunderstorms and gusty winds, increasing the risk of localised flooding. Districts like Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum and Murshidabad are forecast to have thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, with some districts also expecting heavy rainfall.Overall, districts in West Bengal are under the threat of thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds, with varying intensities.
