Surat: A one-year-old girl drowned in a rainwater-filled trench in the Shivan Nagar neighbourhood of Kadodara in Surat district on Thursday. Police registered an unnatural death and launched an inquiry.According to police, the toddler was playing near her home when she fell into a trench dug to drain rainwater away from an adjacent open plot. Due to the recent heavy rain, water had pooled in the plot. Residents dug a trench to channel the water away. The trench remained filled with water and the child fell into it.Family members and residents pulled her out and rushed her for medical treatment, but she could not be saved. She was the daughter of a labourer. The family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, were living in the area for work.Kadodara GIDC police registered an unnatural death case and began an inquiry to establish the exact sequence of events.
