Mumbai: Two people died, and five others were injured after an over 22-foot-tall Ganpati idol of Bhuleshwar Cha Raja fell during its arrival procession at Dr Atmaram Merchant Road, Kabutarkhana, Jay Ambe Chowk, in Bhuleshwar, on Saturday night at around 10 pm.According to the police, one of the dead has been identified as Sanket Nevshe, president of the Ganpati mandal. He, along with Brijesh Hemant Joshi, (38) died when the Ganpati idol allegedly became unbalanced and fell on the procession.The idol was reportedly being transported from Lalbaug to Bhuleshwar. It broke into three pieces and was later placed on a dumper and taken for immersion by members of the mandal, fire officials said.A fire brigade official said, “The welding of the frame holding the idol was probably not done properly. Therefore, the idol slipped out of the frame from the centre and fell. They were almost reaching the pandal when the incident occurred. The injured people were probably sitting on the trolley carrying the idol.”Of the seven injured, three were taken to GT, two to JJ and one each to HN Reliance Hospital and Saifee hospitals. One each at Reliance and GT hospitals was declared dead.The DB Marg police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). The police are conducting further inquiries into the circumstances leading to the incident.The mandal, which is celebrating its 63rd utsav this year, had commissioned the idol to sculptor Aniket Desai.
