Kolkata: A 39-year-old resident of Hooghly’s Rishra allegedly killed his 31-year-old wife at their rented home on Saturday morning, travelled 20km to Kolkata, and died by suicide hours later by jumping in front of a metro train at Belgachhia station around 3pm. The suicide disrupted services on the Blue Line for 50 minutes.Late on Friday, Dipankar and Monika Sarkar’s neighbours at Government Colony in Natungram heard the couple quarrelling bitterly.Alarmed by screams and cries for help by a domestic help who reached the couple’s home at 8am on Saturday, the neighbours informed police, who arrived an hour later to find Monika lying in a pool of blood, her throat slit, with the couple’s seven-year-old daughter sleeping beside her mother’s body. Dipankar, a private firm employee, was missing.Rishra cops registered a case under Sections 85 and 103(1) of BNS and sent the couple’s seven-year-old child to her maternal grandmother’s home.A search was launched for Dipankar and an alert sent out to all police stations. After 3pm, Ultadanga PS cops identified the man, who had jumped to his death at Belgachhia Metro Station, as Dipankar and alerted their counterparts in Rishra.Police said Monica’s family alleged Dipankar suspected his wife of having an extra-marital affair. But neighbours told cops the couple often fought over Dipankar’s affair with a married woman. “We are looking into the possible involvement of a third person,” said Arnab Biswas, DCP, Serampore.
