Day or night, hours-long power cuts irk residents across city, suburbs

Chennai: Power troubles continued for a third straight day on Thursday, as residents of Tiruvottiyur and Tambaram spent the night without electricity following major failures in the city’s distribution network. The outages came a day after similar disruptions struck Palavakkam and TondiarpetIn Tiruvottiyur, men and women blocked the high road that night, staging a protest by lying down on the pavement, frustrated by frequent and prolonged power cuts in the neighborhood. The protesters refused to leave and argued with police officers saying they had gone without electricity for more than five hours.TNPDCL superintendent engineer for Chennai North region said an 11kV feeder supplying the Thyagarayapuram area tripped around 7pm. “After we addressed a suspected cable fault around 7pm, another cable fault occurred at 11pm, causing a further interruption,” the official said. “We made alternate feeding arrangements, and the fault is now being repaired. Normal supply was restored on Friday.”In Tambaram, several residential pockets went dark after a feeder supplying Mullai Nagar from the Puduthangal substation tripped around 6 pm. Feeder faults in Kilpauk, Mylapore and Ambattur also disrupted power for more than an hour that nightTNPDCL officials said that the special teams deployed on the field rushed to the spot and rectified the faults to restore power supply.Meanwhile, underground faults led to hours-long power cuts in different parts of the city including Neelankarai, Tiruvanmiyur, Royapettah, Santhome, Vepery, Choolai and Kaladipet.
