Margao: Residents of Davorlim have strongly opposed the proposed conversion of the village lake under Section 39 A of the Town and Country Planning Act, asserting that the water body remains a vital ecological and community asset that must be preserved. The renewed opposition comes in response to recent remarks by minister Subhash Phal Dessai, who questioned the existence of water in the lake and called for an on-site inspection.“Take an inspection and check whether there is a drop of water in that place,” Phal Dessai said, adding that although the land was classified as a lake in 2021, both official records and the present ground reality should be verified.Residents, however, argued that the lake’s ecological significance cannot be judged by a single observation. They said the water body plays an important role in maintaining the local ecosystem and that their objections are driven by concerns over environmental conservation and the interests of future generations. In a statement, villagers urged authorities to respect the views expressed by the gram sabha and local residents, noting that opposition to any change in the lake’s status has remained consistent.“The lake is an integral part of Davorlim’s natural heritage. We appeal to the government to safeguard this valuable water body and ensure that public interest and environmental protection remain the priority,” the statement said.Residents also vowed to continue their efforts to protect the lake and preserve the ecological balance of the area.
