Mapusa: The last rites of Krishna Naik, 60, were performed on Thursday evening after his family ended a standoff and accepted his body, following the arrest of four men accused of assaulting him at Manshiwada in Chicalim-Colvale.Police identified the main accused as Christopher Michael Paul, 27, and his brother, Stephen, who run a well-digging business and allegedly have criminal records. The other two accused are Pratik Gawas, 22, and Shravan Shetkar, who worked with them.Police said the assault was linked to a long-standing dispute, with Naik repeatedly accusing the Paul brothers of influencing his son. On Wednesday around 5.30pm, the four allegedly returned from a celebration in an intoxicated state, created a disturbance outside Naik’s house and assaulted him when he intervened, beating him with a wooden baton and punching and kicking him.Naik’s brothers, Rupesh and Mahesh, and neighbour Shantaram Dhargalkar, were also attacked when they tried to intervene. Police said Dhargalkar suffered a fracture, while Rupesh and Mahesh sustained multiple injuries. All three were treated and discharged from North Goa District Hospital. Naik, however, died at GMC the same night.Christopher and Pratik were arrested in the early hours of Thursday, while Stephen and Shravan later surrendered. A Mapusa court remanded all four accused to eight days of police custody.Police inspector Sanjit Kandolkar is investigating the case.
