CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu govt under the leadership of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has assured that the govt will fulfil all poll promises, setting the tone for the new administration’s agenda.In his address to the Assembly, the Governor underscored this duty, urging Members to offer constructive support as the govt works to meet public expectations.The Governor also highlighted entrenched inter‑state water issues. Tamil Nadu will continue its two‑language policy and urged the Union government to reconsider implementing the three‑language policy.On Cauvery water, he noted that TN continues to struggle every year despite the Supreme Court verdict, while Karnataka is releasing surplus water. The speech also referred to the interstate dispute with Kerala over the Mullai Periyar dam.Fiscal stress was a central theme. The Governor said the state’s financial position has severely deteriorated, with the White Paper on Tamil Nadu’s finances released to expose the previous government’s fiscal mismanagement.In the last five years, debt nearly doubled to about Rs. 10 lakh crore,28.3% of GSDP, imposing a per‑person debt burden of over Rs. 1 lakh. The revenue deficit rose from Rs. 48,840 crore (2024‑25) to Rs. 78,324 crore (2025‑26), or 2.2% of GSDP. Nearly 23% of total revenue receipts go to interest payments.Tax revenue declined from 5.93% of GSDP (2021‑22) to 5.45% (2025‑26) due to leakages and corruption.Governor reaffirmed commitment to social justice, protecting the state’s 69% reservation, and to welfare for differently abled persons, including implementing 4% reservation.The government’s foremost ideal is to preserve public peace, uphold the rule of law, curb crimes against women with an iron hand, and create a safe environment for women and children.He described CM Vijay’s early achievement as a “Himalayan‑scale” renaissance and a “Whistle Revolution” in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, stressing that the duty of this government is to fulfil the people’s expectations.
