MUMBAI: A 51-year-old businessman allegedly jumped into the sea from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Friday, with police suspecting financial stress could have driven him to take the extreme step.The deceased, identified as Bhavesh Navinchandra Majethia, a resident of Thane, allegedly stopped the taxi on the sea link on the pretext of feeling nauseous before jumping into the water.A police officer said rescue efforts were delayed due to rough sea conditions, but Majethia’s body was later recovered by the Mumbai Police.“Financial stress is suspected. An ADR (Accidental Death Report) has been registered at the Worli police station,” the officer said.Sources said rescue teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. Majethia was taken to Nair Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Police are recording statements of the concerned persons to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.According to police, Majethia had left his home at around 10. 30am on Friday, telling his family that he was going to his workplace. He then took a taxi to the sea link and allegedly jumped into the water around 11. 30am after leaving his phone and bag inside the taxi.Meanwhile, his family members were repeatedly trying to contact him but received no response. When a police team reached the spot, they answered the calls coming to his phone.Police sources said Majethia, who ran a garment shop in Ghatkopar, had allegedly suffered major losses in business. He is survived by his mother, wife and son.The police are investigating the circumstances behind the incident and are trying to establish the exact reason behind the alleged suicide.
