Ahmedabad: Man cheats uncle of ₹2.8 crore

Ahmedabad: A 72-year-old retired construction contractor from Bapunagar has filed a police complaint alleging that his nephew cheated him of Rs 2.8 crore after being entrusted with Rs 4 crore for safekeeping. The complainant told police that both his sons had learning disabilities and later died of illness, one a year ago and the other six years ago. Concerned about his family’s financial security in old age, he said he had handed over his lifetime savings to his nephew, whom he trusted.According to the complaint, the contractor gave his nephew Rs 3.1 crore in cash and Rs 92.6 lakh through bank transfers over eight years until March 2024. The nephew assured him that the money would be kept safely and returned whenever needed.The contractor said he demanded the money back when he needed funds to build a shed on his plot at Kubadthal. However, the nephew allegedly kept delaying repayment, leading to a family meeting in April 2024.

Senior citizen cheated by nephew

At the meeting, held at the complainant’s office on Singarva-Kathwada Road, the nephew allegedly acknowledged the outstanding amount in writing in the contractor’s diary. Several relatives and acquaintances signed the entry as witnesses.Police said the nephew later returned Rs 55 lakh through cash, cheques and online transfers, and also transferred a shop worth Rs 63 lakh to the complainant through a registered sale deed. The total repayment came to Rs 1.18 crore.The complainant alleged that Rs 2.85 crore remains unpaid despite repeated demands. He told police that the nephew eventually refused to return the money and challenged him to take any action he wanted. Police are examining the alleged transactions and the written acknowledgement.
