Kolkata: Khargosh alias Amit Sonkar, who shot into the news for attempted extortion in central Kolkata ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, is on the police radar again.This time, he allegedly targeted his 32-year-old brother-in-law, Santosh Chawdhary, a driver-turned-transporter, shooting and critically injuring him near P K Tagore Ghat on Strand Bank Road early Sunday. Police have termed the incident a “personal revenge”.The shooting occurred at 12.05 am, when Chawdhary, a resident of Sujendra Seth Lane in Jorabagan, was confronted by a group allegedly led by Khargosh, a known criminal from Jorabagan and Howrah who has been arrested multiple times on extortion charges.Eyewitnesses said Sonkar opened fire at point-blank range before fleeing with his accomplices.Chawdhary suffered severe bullet injuries and was rushed to Medical College & Hospital. He is critical.Family members said the shooting followed a bitter domestic dispute. Sonkar’s estranged wife had reportedly left him and moved to her parental home, allegedly unable to bear regular domestic abuse. Chawdhary and Sonkar’s wife are sisters.The victim’s family alleged that Sonkar subsequently created and leaked AI-doctored obscene photographs of female family members, including his estranged wife and Chawdhary’s wife. Despite complaints at Jorabagan PS and cop notices, the dispute continued.Following a complaint by Akash Chawdhary, North Port Police registered a case under BNS Sections 109(1) and 54, besides Sections 25(1B)(a) and 27 of the Arms Act, police said.Sonkar remains absconding as police conduct raids in Howrah and Jorabagan.
