Panaji: Describing the availability of contraband and drugs at the Colvale jail as a “sorry state of affairs” leader of the opposition Yuri Alemao alleged that there is a nexus between politicians, criminals and police personnel.Alemao said that Colvale jail is an example of the connections between the criminals and politicians.“Inmates have a connection with politicians. They phone and place an order for drugs. And these (politicians) then send the drugs through police,” he alleged.Alemao said that the lady guard arrested for smuggling drugs into the jail is being made a scapegoat. He also alleged that there are unofficial check posts in Goa where bribes are collected from vehicles to avoid scrutiny. “An investigation has to be conducted to find out who enters through these checkposts and what comes in and what leaves the state. The border check posts have been given a target of collecting a lakh per month if not they will be transferred. This is nothing but corruption,” alleged Alemao. He was responding to reports that some fishermen were stopped at Keri check post with police allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 25,000 to let their vehicle pass.
