Tamil Nadu: Government appoints interim panel to lead RERA

CHENNAI: The state government on Tuesday appointed an interim panel to steer the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TNRERA), with retired IAS officer K Phanindra Reddy as its chairperson. Retired district judge A Nazir Ahamed and retired IAS officer Reeta Harish Thakkar have been appointed members. This follows the recent resignations of the authority’s chairperson and members. On Tuesday, the state govt has superseded TNRERA for six months with immediate effect, or until its reconstitution, whichever is earlier. In an order issued by the housing and urban development department, the govt said the authority was not in a position to discharge its statutory functions and perform its duties under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.The appointees will exercise all powers and perform all functions of TNRERA in accordance with the Act and rules for six months or until the authority is reconstituted. “Since all members have resigned, there is a provision in the Act to appoint temporary members. The state govt has also written to the Madras high court to nominate a judge for the search committee,” an official said. TNRERA was constituted under Section 20 of the RERA Act to regulate the real estate sector and protect homebuyers’ interests.
