1 dead, several trapped after building collapses in Delhi's Rohini amid rain; rescue underway

NEW DELHI: One dead, one rescued as a four-storey building collapsed in north west Delhi’s Rohini Sector 16 on Wednesday evening amid rainfall, triggering a major rescue operation as several people are feared trapped beneath the debris.The incident comes just over a month after a four-storey building collapsed in South Delhi’s Saidulajab on May 30, killing six people and injuring several others.The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a call about the collapse at 4. 19pm. The building, located opposite the MCD school in Sector 16, came crashing down, prompting the immediate deployment of four fire tenders, two water bowsers, one multipurpose vehicle and an intensive rescue tender.According to preliminary information, the building was old and was reportedly undergoing construction or renovation work when it collapsed. The exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined.Firefighters, police personnel and disaster response teams are carrying out rescue operations to locate and evacuate those feared trapped under the rubble. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of people trapped or whether there have been any casualties.Visuals from the site showed fire officials and other rescue personnel attempting to establish contact with people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble through small cavities formed between the collapsed concrete slabs.The area has been cordoned off as heavy machinery is being used to remove debris. Senior Delhi Fire Service officials and delhi police are supervising the rescue operation.Further details on the cause of the collapse, casualties and the number of people rescued are awaited.
