Fresh Thaltej cave-in adds to city’s monsoon road woes

Ahmedabad: A fresh cave-in on Rajpath Rangoli Road in Thaltej area trapped a passing car on Thursday afternoon, adding to a growing list of road collapses reported across the city since beginning of the monsoon.The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed the vehicle lodged inside the depression as the driver unsuccessfully tried to drive it out. The front portion of the car sustained damage, though no injuries were reported.The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) cordoned off the affected stretch and began preparatory work for repairs.With the latest collapse in Thaltej, Ahmedabad witnessed six major cave-ins since the monsoon season started, all in the western part of the city.According to the AMC, repair work was also in progress at several other locations. Deputy municipal commissioner (North West Zone) Nilesh Patel said, “Yesterday, there was a leak in an underground water pipeline on Rajpath-Rangoli Road, which led to road settlement. We are investigating why the leak occurred, and once the cause is established, we will fix the problem.”On July 7, the city received an average of 17.63 mm of rainfall, but triggered multiple cave-ins across the city.Near the APMC market in Vasna, a cave-in swallowed an AMC garbage truck. In New Ranip, a trailer truck got stuck after a newly constructed road subsided near Khodiyar Mata temple.Road settlement was also reported near Anand Niketan School in Thaltej, while a large pothole developed beside the underconstruction flyover near Vadaj Circle, where repair work was under way.A machine-hole collapse near the gate of Jivraj Park Society in Vejalpur forced the closure of one portion of the busy crossroads, leading to traffic congestion during peak hours. Another cave-in occurred near the metro station at Jivraj Park Crossroads, after damage to a drainage line, adding to woes of the commuters.Lalita Patel, a resident living off 100-ft road in Stellite area said, “The cave in at Jivraj Park Crossroads has become a major headache for almost a week. It creates dangerous traffic jams.”Similar incidents were reported opposite the Sabarmati swimming pool and near Pallav crossroads in Naranpura due to machine-hole failures.
