Govt defers AI traffic camera rollout till July 15

Panaji: Transport minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday said state govt has deferred the rollout of automated traffic enforcement through AI-powered cameras at 26 locations by a fortnight.“I have given instructions not to start implementation through AI-powered cameras till July 15. I have told the department to create more awareness. I have called a meeting on July 6 to decide on implementation — how to start and when to start. People have started opposing those cameras also. You don’t want cameras. People don’t want to follow the rules. I really don’t understand,” Godinho said.He said CCTV cameras will eventually be installed across Goa. “There is an urgent need for CCTV cameras across the state as they help in detecting crime,” he said. “It will take a little time, and I want to do it gradually. We don’t want to do anything fast and forcibly. You know how sensitive people are. Without an issue, people make issues. I don’t want to give them another reason to raise their voices eventhough it is the right thing. Sometimes you cannot do the right thing also.”Godinho said motorists will be forced to slow down once they start receiving challans for traffic violations detected through CCTV cameras.“People are driving and riding recklessly. You drive or ride as if you want to die. People should take care of themselves, and they should value their own life and the lives of others as well,” he said. The state recorded a sharp decline in road accident fatalities in May 2026 compared with the same month last year. According to the traffic cell of Goa police, the number of fatal accidents and road accident deaths fell by 24%.However, the total number of road accidents rose by 9%, with 242 accidents reported in May 2026 compared with 221 in May 2025. Grievous accidents also increased by 75%, rising to 35 from 20 during the same period.Fatal accidents declined from 29 in May 2025 to 22 in May 2026.
