Davorlim centre erases dumping black spot

Panaji: A pilot waste deposit centre at Davorlim has cleared a major garbage dumping black spot, according to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC). The centre cost around Rs 6 lakh and includes a CCTV camera. It is powered by solar energy. GWMC plans to set up more such centres to remove black spots.Since the manned collection centre was established on June 18, it has collected about 100kg of wet waste and around 60kg of dry waste daily. It also receives 15–20kg of sanitary waste each day, which was earlier thrown along the roadside.Apart from routine highway cleaning, GWMC identified about 10 major littering black spots across North and South Goa in Jan and carried out focused interventions through daily cleaning and continuous monitoring. In North Goa, black spots at Madel, Peddem and Ganeshpuri were addressed.GWMC also identified Merces, the Western bypass, and Davorlim as major black spots. Merces and the Western bypass are maintained through daily cleaning. At Davorlim, a manned transfer station lets residents deposit segregated waste free of cost, curbing dumping, said MD Harish Adconkar. He said areas of concern included near Davorlim church and Mugali junction by Hedgewar High School, where up to 1,300kg of long-dumped waste was cleared.
