Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Goa on July 1 after widespread moderate to heavy rainfall lashed the state over the past 24 hours. Five rain gauge stations recorded over 100mm of rain. Despite the spell, Goa continues to face a 34% seasonal rainfall deficit.The state recorded an average rainfall of 88.1mm on Tuesday, which was 108.5% above normal for the day.Margao recorded the highest rainfall at 126.1mm, followed by Sanquelim (118.4mm), Sanguem (110.4mm), Quepem (110mm) and Dharbandora (104.4mm). Other stations reporting heavy rainfall included Valpoi (89.2mm), Pernem (89.2mm), Mapusa (89mm), Ela (86.2mm), Canacona (74.4mm), Ponda (70mm), and Panaji (67.4mm), while Mormugao (50.2mm) and Dabolim (46.6mm) received moderate rainfall.Between June 1 and June 30, Goa received 603.2mm of rainfall against the normal 914mm, leaving the state with a 34% deficit despite the recent heavy showers.The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over the next three days. An orange alert remains in force for July 1, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds of 40-50kmph likely at a few places in both districts. On July 2, moderate rainfall with heavy spells at isolated places and gusty winds of 40-50kmph is expected.The IMD has also warned of squally weather along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast until July 3.Maximum temperatures were 30.5°C in Panaji and 30.4°C in Mormugao, while minimum temperatures stood at 23.6°C and 23.4°C, respectively. Relative humidity remained high at 98% in both locations.
