Ahmedabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city crime branch has begun investigating an alleged Rs 6.3-crore fraud case in which an accountant of a jewellery company on CG Road allegedly siphoned off 3.85kg of 24-carat gold and Rs 13 lakh in cash over a year.According to a complaint filed by the company’s director, the accused accountant had been working with the company for around eight years and handled accounts and purchase-related work. He was also authorised to undertake sale, purchase and financial transactions in the director’s absence. The complainant alleged that the accountant misused this authority to gradually remove gold from the company’s stock between April 1, 2025 and April 18, 2026.The alleged discrepancy came to light on April 18 when the director checked the company’s stock records and questioned the accountant. The accountant allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and later became unavailable, with his phone switched off.The company subsequently examined its stock register and found a major discrepancy in its fine-gold inventory. According to the complaint, the closing stock should have been 5,272.357 grams, while only 1,422.357 grams was physically available. The company therefore found 3,850 grams of 24-carat gold missing. The complainant valued the missing gold at Rs 6.1 crore, calculating its value at Rs 16,000 per gram. The company also checked its CCTV footage after detecting the stock discrepancy. The footage allegedly showed the accountant carrying cash out of the office on March 26 and April 14. A subsequent check of the company’s cash book allegedly revealed that Rs 13 lakh could not be accounted for.The complainant alleged that the accountant had taken the gold and cash and handed them over to his father and two brothers, who had earlier worked for other companies in the same business group. The family members were also named as accused in the complaint. The complaint states that the accountant and his family members had allegedly acted together, causing the company a total loss of Rs 6.3 crore.
