CHENNAI: Chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced a Rs 3-per-litre hike in the procurement price of milk from producers supplying milk to cooperative societies, taking the total procurement price from Rs 38 to Rs 41 per litre.“The govt has decided to increase the procurement price by Rs 1 per litre through cooperative societies and the govt incentive from Rs 3 to Rs 5 per litre, taking the total procurement price from Rs 38 to Rs 41,” Vijay said in the assembly under Rule 110.The hike will benefit more than 3.16 lakh milk producers supplying milk to primary milk producers’ cooperative societies across the state. The govt said the decision was aimed at recognising the work of producers and addressing rising costs of cattle feed and labour.At present, milk containing 4.3% fat and 8.2% other solids is procured at Rs 35 per litre, with a state incentive of Rs 3, taking the total procurement price to Rs 38. This rate has been in effect since Nov 5, 2022.Tamil Nadu has 8,800 milk cooperative societies, from which around 34 lakh litres of milk are procured daily from 3.16 lakh producers. Aavin sells around 31 lakh litres of milk to consumers every day.The latest hike will entail an additional expenditure of Rs 30 crore a month and Rs 360 crore a year, the govt said.
