Surat: A leopard escaped from a cage in the forest department office of Jhagadia town in Bharuch district on Sunday morning. After escaping from the cage, the animal attacked two women, Lalita Mela (20) and Rinkal Mela (17), who were working in a nearby society and fled into the fields. The victims suffered small injuries and scratches on their hands and legs and were later shifted to Bharuch civil hospital for treatment. Jhagadia range forest officials have laid traps to recapture the cat.Earlier, following complaints from Umalla village of Bharuch about the leopard, the forest department had laid a trap. The leopard was captured and caged in Umalla. The cage was later brought to the Jhagadia forest department office. However, the leopard escaped from the cage and reached a nearby society. TOI tried to contact forest officials but they could not be contacted for comments.
