Ahmedabad: An AMTS bus driver was booked for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol after the bus hit a road divider near the riverfront road below Ellis Bridge late on Tuesday night. According to a complaint filed by a lawyer who witnessed the incident, the bus was coming from the Sarangpur side around 11.50pm. Instead of taking the Ellisbridge flyover, the driver veered onto the riverfront road near Gujari Bazaar and rammed into a divider near Mahalakshmi temple.The complainant told police he was riding towards Raikhad after taking the riverfront turn when he saw the bus collide with the divider. He and other passersby stopped and asked the driver to step out, but the driver allegedly remained inside the bus. Suspecting that he was drunk, the complainant called the police emergency helpline.Police teams arrived at the spot and took both the complainant and the driver to the B Traffic police station. A case was registered against the driver for alleged drunk driving and negligent driving.During questioning, officials found that the driver had apparently taken the wrong road instead of going onto the bridge. They said he appeared disoriented when asked about the route.No passengers or other road users were injured in the crash. The bus was slightly damaged after it hit the divider.Police said they will be examining the driver’s medical test reports and other evidence to determine the extent of intoxication at the time of the accident.
