Coconut tree collapse snaps power in Calangute

Calangute: A coconut tree collapsed late on Monday night at Porbawaddo in Calangute, bringing down electricity cables and branches of a mango tree on the main road to Arpora. No one was injured, but power supply to the area was disrupted. The incident comes less than 10 days after a huge bhendi tree was uprooted in the same locality during heavy rain, bringing down an electricity pole and cables and causing a power outage.Panicked locals and panchayat members rushed to the spot and cleared the debris with an earthmover. Firefighters from the Pilerne fire station and electricity department linemen removed the fallen cables and restored power supply.Agitated locals said, “Authorities should take pre-emptive steps and cut or trim weak and dangerous trees because there can be an accident at anytime. It should not happen that we only want to cut a tree after it falls. This is a major road with traffic from Anjuna side and Calangute.”“Fortunately it happened when there was no traffic and at night. The coconut tree fell because of strong winds and when it fell, it also brought down branches of a mango tree,” a panchayat member said.
