NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of the country on Wednesday, as the southwest monsoon remains active over most regions of India. According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, while several northern, central and southern states are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds.The weather office has also indicated that active monsoon conditions will continue through the week due to a well-marked low-pressure area over central India and favourable atmospheric conditions. Residents in heavy rainfall-prone regions are advised to remain alert for waterlogging, localized flooding, reduced visibility and traffic disruptions.According to the IMD, Delhi is likely to witness a generally cloudy sky on Wednesday, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places. Gusty winds are expected during thunderstorm activity, which may bring temporary relief from humid weather conditions. Brief spells of rain could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and slow traffic movement during peak hours. Residents are advised to exercise caution while commuting and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
IMD monsoon update
The IMD said the southwest monsoon remains active across large parts of the country. A well-marked low-pressure area over east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours, supporting widespread rainfall over central, western and northern India.An offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to the Kerala coast is also contributing to enhanced rainfall activity along the west coast.
